The Wow Kafe - 'Betty Short's Smile' (Play Records)

Here's some happily melodic post-rock as if played by people who've been lucky enough to never have heard the stupid term (at least until the trademark military drumming comes in). For the song's transformation from innocent tune to fuzzy peach I'd been gonna use a metaphor of a kids' playfight gone serious, but they use the familiar rhythm salute for an apparent reason instead of the usual phony grandeur.

Post-rock really means post-vocal: the Wow Kafe dispense with the need for a lyric for playing with plenty changes of tack and so loud you couldn't hear anyone sing anyway. Sometimes all you need is the music. This means that you don't always need an excuse of interpreting someone's life in order to make some noise. At least, as is often the case with Glasgow's post-rock, it's good noise (but they should stick with the violin).
