THE SUPERNATURALS & BIG DAY OUT @ Harlow Square, 26/3/02 / home / reviews index
Everybody's fave 'Smile'-y Scots seem to have found finance trouble after being dropped by EMI - tonight they're all wearing exactly the same clothes as they were at the Hull date of their tour, nine days ago. James tells us about his sweat-jacket. "I bought it on a market in Glasgow the other week, I thought it was a replica Archie Gemill top. But I looked in the label to see, 'England, 1966'! - My skin burns!" Obviously the Supers haven't lost their affable stage presence, despite behind-the-scenes troubles - mind, anyone would be happy after seeing such a support as BIG DAY OUT.

Smarter than most, the BDO boys jokingly claim there's nothing planned in their identical suits; as all three pour themselves an identical glass of orange juice. Drummer Chris rounds this off with an apt >boom-boom!< before they kick into 'Simplicity', the first song from their new CD, showcasing their own type of sunny delight. These songs are more timeless than nostalgic. That's despite coming on to cartoon theme 'Jamie & The Magic Torch', and being less likely to listen to Limp Bizkit than to the Beatles or the Who. Catchy and convincing, whether singing of tap-dancing bed-bugs or the girls at their local sandwich shop, guitarists Dave and Mark win with harmonising smiles.
